I think love is the key. It is also important to note that mutually loving relationships require autonomy and the right to accept or reject the other. Otherwise, it is simply God loving or hating himself back.
So how does an all powerful God create this autonomy? That is the mystery and perhaps that is in large measure why he is and has been so interested in us. Out of all the things in the arge expanse of the universe, is the human will the only aspect within the universe that he has chosen to relinquish direct control over? If so, it would explain his interest.
Edit: After all, do we not crave that which we cannot or do not have? Why would God be any different?
