My late Mom was an invalid for the last dozen or so years of her life. She had crippling spinal and leg pain that surgery and pain medications could not fully ameliorate. She lost a lot of muscle mass and her hands were also crippled by arthritis. She spent the last two years of her life in a nursing home (where my late Dad would visit her every day) -- however, halfway through that stay Covid came along, and for the last year of her life she was not allowed visitors (because the facility had to protect the old folks, of course).
