@moonbus saidWhy do we not see this process happening today on our planet as it supposedly did for millions of years?
Even good scientists sometimes use sloppy language, and sloppy readers sometimes misread metaphors literally. The word "assistance" is poorly chosen to describe what is going on at the cellular level, because it is a metaphor which leads certain readers down the primrose path to the assumption that assistance implies an assistant, and an intelligent one at that. But this is a ...[text shortened]... e baking a cake, which does indeed require an intelligent baker. Cakes don't just happen; cells did.
Why aren't we as humans still evolving?
So as you would probably say we have a higher evolved brain then all other life forms on earth. So why aren't all other life forms progressing to our level?
And if we did evolve, why don't we have all the immunity's needed to fight off all sickness?
Why do we not have all the abilities to run faster, climb better, have better eye sight, more strength, handle heat and cold better, etc, etc?
If we did have all those better qualities in the past, why did we lose them? It would seem if we have possibly lived longer in an evolutionary time scale, we should have it all.
From what I think it is pretty clear we aren't doing so good.
So where is the proof in humans that we evoled into something better?
@galveston75 saidSo, Mr. Moonbus. You still here? Got a question for you about things just evolving from pretty much close nothing? I think your opinion is that we all evolved from some very simple life forms or just from some dirt and some wiggly scum water, that are still here today, into the more complicated ones we can still see all over the planet now.
Why do we not see this process happening today on our planet as it supposedly did for millions of years?

Lets think about this.....
If you were walking thru a pristine forest on another planet that as far as you knew had never had any life other then what what you see in plants lets say.
But you came across a well. Maybe one that was not in good shape or even usable.
Would you think the forest built this simple round rock wall and dug the hole?
Nothing else like it on the planet. Did this possibly evolve on it's own? Did the forest gather up the few rocks in that circle? Did an earthquake make that hole and then stack up the surrounding rocks and lay the rope off to the side and make the metal crank and pail off to the other?
So what would one think about this? Did this simple thing "just happen" or "just evolve"? Compared to something alive... this is nothing. So would you still think this could "Just happen" because those few items needed to make a well are from the earth... Right?
Do you think they needed a designer? One would think so.....
@galveston75 saidAre you basically saying your god built a species plagued with inherent design flaws?

To me, see, the flaws in the human anatomy and immune system point toward evolution as an explanatory model, not away from it. We've got that "feel" of having been put together by trial and error. From the tailbone to the appendix, we're Frankensteins of Time through and through.
But all living things evolve in nature, including things that cause sickness. We should not expect the human immune system to evolve to defeat all infectious agents. There are too many such agents, and they change too rapidly. Moreover, we depend on many kinds of bacteria for good health, which makes it undesirable for the immune system to attack all bacteria. We live in symbiosis with them, and they are critical for digestion.
It's also a mistake to view humans as the most successful species. In fact microbes of all sorts are arguably more successful, and they're successful without needing to develop a big brain and all that. There just isn't a need for most species to "progress to our level," because intelligence is not the sole commodity that best assures the survival of a species.
Humans evolved to become "good enough" at what they do in the environments where they do it. That's all there is to it. There just isn't a need for the species to be able to handle hot items from the oven without using mitts. It's just not a significant factor contributing to the adaptability of humans as a species, so "enhanced heat resistance" is not selected for by evolutionary mechanisms.

@galveston75 saida) every life form on the planet is still evolving, including humans. Humans are gradually losing their wisdom teeth -- that's one example of how we continue to evolve.

b) you don't see it because evolution in large mammals works over millions of years, and the human lifespan is too short to notice it in our own case. Evolution is visible in species which have short life spans and quick reproduction cycles.
c) there is plenty of evidence of evolution happening right in front of our eyes, in organisms which have much shorter lifespans, and therefore much faster reproduction cycles, than our own. For example, the COVID-19 virus when it first appeared had a very high mortality rate among host humans. An invasive organism which kills the first host it infects will not propagate itself very well; COVID very quickly mutated (= evolved) into less-lethal strains, which propagate to multiple hosts and thereby spread farther. The less-lethal strains are still with us, having out-propagated the more-lethal strains. That is survival of the most adaptable in action.
d) why we aren't we smarter? why can't we see infra-red? why can't we run faster? why can't we see into the future? why aren't we immune to every sickness? Evolution is not here to benefit humans. Evolution works on the entire biosphere, not individual specimens. Just because you have a Marvel-comics wish list of super-capabilities, does not mean there is any evolutionary pressure to fulfil it. Any species which became immune to every form of sickness would quickly over-populate its habitat and run out of food. Death is part of the natural life cycle; get used to it. Nature has no stake whatever in the individual; individuals are supernumeraries. I know, it's hard for humans to accept this, humans are narcissists, they think they are important. They aren't. We are in no way evolutionarily superior to cockroaches or bacteria, and they will ultimately feed on our cadavers, because that's how nature works.
e) there are more bacteria cells inside your body than there are galveston-cells inside your body. As far as bacteria are concerned, YOU do not exist; you're just the 'local environment' which supplies THEM with nutrients. Humbling, isn't it? That's how nature works. In fact, without bacteria, you would not be here. Without the bacteria which live in your gut, you would not be able to digest the food you eat. We need them, they do not need us. Humbling, isn't it.
@MartinS saidAs Dennett said, just because something is intelligible (to us) does not mean it is intelligent or that something intelligent must have made it.
There is no god in any shape or form
The only thing out there is the consciousness of the universe; which we don't understand.
Plus of course; Keith Richards who was here before the beginning
However, how Keith Richards has managed to survive so long, when so many of his generation and chosen profession did not, is unintelligible, and that's what makes him so astonishing !

Sex drugs and rock and roll
And of course; chess - he has to be the King
@MartinS saidI read an interview with Richards once, long ago. He made two very valid and I think very wise remarks. One is that every drug will get you only so high, in the nature of the drug itself; taking more of it does not get you higher, it either puts you to sleep or kills you. A lot of drug users don't recognize this, and kill themselves overdosing trying to get higher. Second, he recognized early on in his career that millions of screaming fans, especially girls going wonky when you're on stage, does not make you anything very special; you're still just a regular guy with a guitar in yer hands. A lot of rock stars never get this; they think they're something special, that they deserve an extra portion of everything. A lesson in humility I think everyone should learn -- especially that guy in the White House right now.

[I did enjoy reading the rest of your post (or will, when I have finished it; and by the time you read this, I might have) -- I did not mean to be dismissive of the rest by only replying to the first line.]
