I think the expression about .. selling ones soul.. , is not about actually selling, but in doing wrong things or committing sin for some kind of earthly reward, like money or power etc. So yes, people can "sell their soul" in that sense, ie they do wrong things so that they can benefit financially.

I personally think it's all about love. I personally would not sleep with someone's else's wife because of all the pain and sorrow it would cause many others including God; the husband, wife, kids, their whole family; and, my own wife and family. "Loving others as yourself" pretty much says it all.
