I'm not a theist, but I tried out this song for my daily hill walk a while back and found that the beat wasn't what I wanted. But it's positive, uplifting, especially if you're a Christian.
There are a couple of lines that could trigger the usual debates between theists here:
"Never been a sinner I never sinned"
(not a sinner?)
and
"When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best"
(immediately when I die?)
I have seen such things argued.
But generally its a good upbeat folk-rock-spiritual.
Try this one. Except for one line, it could be to Mary, you know, God's mum? It's got a better walking/hiking beat.
or
Up all night I could not sleep
The whiskey that I drank was cheap
With shakin' hands I went
and I lit up my last cigarette
Well the sun came
and night had fled
And sleepy eyed
I reached my bed
I saw you sleepy dreamin'
there all covered and warm
(chorus)
South City midnight lady
I'm much obliged indeed
You sure have saved this man
whose soul was in need
I thought there was no reason
for all these things I do
But the smile that I sent out
returned with you
When day has left the night behind
and shadows roll across my mind
I sometimes find myself alone
out walkin' the street
Yes and when I'm feelin' down and blue
then all I do is think of you
and all my foolish problems
seem to fade away
(chorus)
South City midnight lady
I'm much obliged indeed
You sure have saved this man
whose soul was in need
I thought there was no reason
for all these things I do
But the smile that I sent out
returned with you
