Just to show you how irrational religious thinking is, take a look
at the rediculous fear of the number 666. When did that start?
What idiot decided ANY number should be associated with the "devil"?

The number is referred in the bible.

Going back to frogstomp's comments on Sumer, it's interesting to note that 666 is the sum of the numbers 1 to 36 and, according to him, Sumerian mathematics were base-36.

Can it be another allegory to knowledge (the sum of knowledge) that predated Christianity and was adapted over time? Or a mere coincidence?

I'm beginning to feel paranoid after the recent discussions in this forum! 🙂

Edit: I'm discarding the possibility of the number being 616 for now. The Sumerian link would probably fall if that was the number.

Rev 13:18 in the King James Version, in case any of you are wondering...

"Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number [is] Six hundred threescore [and] six."

Yes, but who made it famous?..Hollywood!...I agree with Sonhouse..it is irrational thinking/fears and fables. Yes it is in the last book of the bible, but it is also figurative, not literal. It could be a "chip" inserted under the skin, etc., but all this is after the rapture. So in the mean time Hollywood makes lots of money.

Zah? 😕

How did Hollyood make the number of the beast famous? Iron Maiden, perhaps. But they're British!

The most hilarious part of your post has to be how you say the number is actually a metaphor for something, and it's not a literal reference. It may actually be a metaphor for a tracking chip or UPS code branded onto your forehead. Oh La La! Tu as besoin une claque! 😵

EDIT - My poor french. LOL

It's also in the Old Testament, so it's a bit improbable to think it was chosen randomly.

The connotation (can I call it that?) of the number 666 clearly predates Hollywood and it probably even predates JC. Some associate the 666 talents of Solomon as a metaphor for greed, the idea that this number was chosen randomly is a bit improbable, in my opinion.

Edit: Topys

Guys, you know of course that 666 is an area code right? Soon it will be a new, additional area code designating mobile devices.

See that idiot on the interstate in the phonebooth lane? It's teh mark of the beast! As you pass him on the right, secure in the knowledge that you don't own a cell phone, at least you know who won't be joining you in the rapture!
