This will sound more insulting than it is meant, but... once a person gets hooked on the idea that running their life only requires finding an authoritative text that tells them what to believe and do, the rest follows.
Originally posted by Grampy BobbyThat's a different kind of authority, Bob. Chess books are 'authoritative' if the author has experience and knowledge of the subject. The author of chess book does not command you to play a certain move and threaten to curse you and your family with many isolated pawns for 4 generations if you refuse. He, or she, suggests effective strategies, based on (as JS357 said) what works in practice.
