What about Job?
And a lot of suffering IS 'undeserved'. But it is the direct result of man's actions, and not God's. I'm not saying that most people are responsible for their own suffering, but that also is sometimes the case.

If undeserved suffering can be laid upon Job, with God's approval, then it can happen to any of us.
And....God was not innocent in His little 'bet' with Satan.
I think perhaps these insights into God's nature shows also that our time on this earth is overvalued by us. God seems to make clear over and over that this limited time of suffering on earth is nothing compared to what comes next... a life much closer to God, a life more akin to what was meant for us before the fall. The life of Jesus the Christ shows there is more for us after this life than in it.
