The Parable of the Sower & the Seed, given by Jesus, provides some insight into what exactly is mouth worship and lip service to God and Christ
There is no doubt that speaking with your mouth of your faith without acting on that belief is distasteful to God. The Bible is full of examples of people who practice it and describes the fate that await such people.
Jesus describes 4 groups of people who hear the word of God, and who received the word of God in their hearts.
1. Heard the word, Believed in their hearts, but the devil take away the belief from their heart
2. Heard the word, Believed in their hearts, but fell away due to temptation
3. Heard the word, Believed in their hearts, but carried away with riches etc
4. Heard the word, Believed in their hearts, bear fruit
The first 3 groups are PARROTS - all talkers, who believe, but do nothing else and are guilty of mouth worship.
The 4th group are EAGLES - they are doers, these are pleasing to God and these will inherit the Kingdom of God.
There are Christians who believe in a doctrine which preaches that all 4 groups
will be in the Kingdom of God, simply because they heard the word, they believe in their hearts.
Jesus was clear... that is not good enough
The seed is the word of God.
Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
(Luke 8:11-15 KJV)
