Really and truly, I think God required certain guidelines be followed for mans own benefit. It is much easier to require certain things not be eaten than to attempt to explain the chemical and biological reasons to not eat them. "Don't eat that" gets the point across just fine. Same thing with circumcision, there are possible problems if personal hygiene is not performed routinely.
