Personal preference, just list your top five favorite holidays. You can say why if you want.

    1) Halloween kids get to run wild, while adults pretend they are kids
    2) 4th of July the obvious, plus my first kid was born (plus fireworks!)
    3) any full moon I like bonfires
    4) whatever gives us a day off
    5) earth day I can't help feeling like I should love it

    1) Thanksgiving. Turkey, football, cool weather.

    2) Halloween. The funnest of all holidays.

    3) 4th of July. Very fond memories of this holiday when I was a kid. Cooking out on the beach, tons of people around, got to go sailing off the beach one year, anticipation of fireworks and then the fireworks, which never disappointed.

    4) Easter. Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the World.

    5) Labor Day. The start of fall, my favorite season, playoffs and World Series in baseball in the offing, along with the start of the regular season in football.

Why not Christmas? Way too commercial and secularized but the reason for the holiday is obviously important.

Ramadan, followed by its culmination Idul Fitri, is probably the best living here where I do. A lot of offices go semi-dormant for a whole month, so work tails off quite markedly and it's possible to escape from it.

The same can't be said for the other two big holidays here, Easter and Christmas, which kind of come and go quite quickly ~ although sometimes the work tails off for the last week of December and the first week of January.

Ramadan is a little bit awkward as when the month falls differs from year to year, coming about 7-9 days 'earlier' each year. In 2000 Christmas and Ramadan coincided but I was living in Japan at the time, so I didn't feel the full benefits of it despite being in Indonesia for Christmas.

Independence Day here is 17th August (the day in 1945 that the Indonesian government-in-waiting declared its independence from the Netherlands; the former colonial power did not actually recognize the new country until the end of 1949 after four years where the Indonesians were not strong enough to kick the Dutch out and the Dutch were not strong enough to exert control). There's quite a bit of build up to 17th August every year and it is very much a trigger for civic pride related activities like cleaning up the neighbourhood and pageants etc.

Er....um.....you are not allowed to say "Christmas" anymore.

You can refer to it as the Winter Solstice of the non-gendered people.

So FMF posts the name of the surgeon that operated on me on his profile, I ask him if he knows the guy and he quickly changed it to someone else and ignores me. Is the dude stalking me or is it just a coincidence?

    He’s probably stalking you.
