A different poster said "To help yourself is to rely on self." But to help yourself is to do the footwork. If you want a wife or a job or groceries, you can't sit in your livingroom and expect them to appear by the grace of God. You have to do the footwork. You have to help yourself. You have to meet actual women, look for a job, earn money and go to the store for the groceries. You have to do your part. That's what that saying means. Even if you believe that God is calling you to a certain job or ministry, you have to prepare yourself by getting the education or training that goes with it, making the effort to find a position in that field, etc. God will help you, but only if you do your part -- only if you help yourself.

There's a verse in the bible somewhere that say something like this, "God makes the rain to fall and the sun to shine on believers and unbelievers alike".

Of course. Remember Jesus was talking about how the birds don't gather stores into warehouses, but God provides? Well, the birds have to go out and get their food! God doesn't bring it to them!
