I don't think anyone is listening.
To be honest for us lower level players the big open tournaments aren't much use. Okay we get the occasional pleasure of beating someone ranked a few hundred points above us. But usually its a little pointless. We are not there to masssage the egos of the top site players. Although granted we may learn a little. But with little idea of what we are doing, how are our brains set up to learn.
Thus I would favour the vast majority of tournos from now on to be banded rather than open. What do other site members think?
Perhaps Russ is waiting for other tournaments to finish and clear first?

I agree, I think the vast majority of tournaments should be banded.
Speaking purely personally, there's really no pleasure to be had in getting your arse handed to you on a plate by a much more highly-ranked player, on either side, I'd imagine. I play chess to relax after work, to improve my game and to modestly increase my rating. I find the best way to do this is to take on players of a similar ability, with an occasional higher-ranked opponent to test myself against (which is why I enjoy clan play).
I'm not interested in providing yet more cannon fodder for the best 20 players, which is why I haven't entered and large-scale open tournaments for some time now...
Just IMHO.
The Lost Bobby's clan will be sponsoring a few banded tourneys very soon. So it might not be a bad thing having a bit of a gap since the last banded tourneys.
I agree 100% Banded comps are the best. I want to win a comp one-day and unless everyone 2000+ are off sick, I and and everyone else has got bucklies chance in none at any of the grouped randoms.
Looking at the stats:
52 players rated 2000+
261 players rated 1700-2000
332 players rated 1600 - 1700
etc... big whopping great low rated shifted bell curve
Don't know exact figures but 6700 players are mentioned on the player table. That means that really, the grouped random's are for less than 1% of the community (ie 2000+). whereas banded comps can cover ALL or just particular segments at a time.
Competition is good and losing is fine, but to know that you have NO CHANCE is demorilizing and takes all the fun out of it.
Of course cheats (specifically rating manipulators) can ruin those banded tourneys.
I don't know what's going on with Russ, generally great work, but seems a bit distracted at the moment. Then again, I am a high maintenance member.. asking all sorts of stuff from him.. he he... 🙂

perhaps a fairer way of running banded tourneys is for 6 tournaments:
1 tournament for the best 1000 players; rated over 1512
1 tournament for the next 1000 players; rated 1386-1512
1 tournament for the next 1000 players; rated 1300-1386
1 tournament for the next 1000 players; rated 1218-1300
1 tournament for the next 1000 players; rated 1129-1218
1 tournament for the next 1000 players; rated under 1129
of course the bandings are arranged by highest rating in the last 30 days so i spose all the ratings need to be shifted up twenty points or so.
