Don't do it.

There are many wonderful books to be read.
Remember, good science fiction IS good fiction.

Currently reading Schismatrix by Bruce Sterling. It's pretty fantastic so far.

I really love some of Sterlings Short stories set in that same universe like "Spider Rose" and "The Swarm". Top notch. I haven't read Schismatrix yet though. I'd be interested in what you think when you're finished.
Is it the version that contains the connected short stories? I believe it's billed as "Schismatrix Plus".

Michael Marshall Smith: Only Forward.
One of the funniest and most imaginative cyber-punk books I've read in a long while.

Just about anything by Philip Dick.

Also, The Galactic Millieu Trilogy by Julian May, and The Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter F Hamilton.
Oh, now they're good. I'd recommend trying Intervention before the Galactic Milieu though - it's a stand-alone prequel. Then there's the Saga of the Exiles which ties into them as well.

You also can't go wrong with Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Dune, or any of the Elminster books

Almost any of Orson Scott Cards books, like the Call of Earth series, the whole Enders Game series, Xenocide, Children of the mind, etc.,
Another good two book series (so far), The Sparrow and Children of God by Mary Doria Russell.

I highly recommend "The Futurological Congress" by Stanislaw Lem. Its kind of a take on state hype through ever decreasing realities. Also anything by Philip K Dick, particularly "Ubik" (another alternative reality experiment).

Xenocide let me down. It wasn't up to the level of the rest of the Ender's Game stuff.

That's the one with the piggies right?

'Maldoror' isn't bad weird fiction either ...

Lately I thoroughly enjoyed The Tain (short stories by China Mieville).

I enjoyed Consider Phlebas & The Player of Games by Iain M Banks.
