Just started watching this. Half way through series 1. This is very good stuff.
So. Why wasn't it a smash hit, as it were?

The characters are bigger than the stories. Clevor scripts nonetheless. I wouldn't watch any of them if given a choice.
I don't watch many series but I do quite enjoy Breaking Bad.
The Wire is my favorite series of all time. The Shield is also among my favorites. Shows like NYPD Blue and the like were good, but IMO, can't measure up to these two great crime dramas.
My other favorite series of all time include:
Rome
The Tudors
Dexter
The West Wing
The Practice (first half; before it got stupid with Bobby and Lindsay's boo-hoo sordid relationship)
24 (first 4 seasons)
Prison Break
Great short-lived series or mini-series that you should check out if you like the above include:
Generation Kill
The Kill Point
Murder One

The new series starts tonight in the States, a full frustrating year after the end of the last series - but if you want to give it a go, start at the beginning. Can't say too much about the plot, of which there is a lot in an almost Greek tragic way, and Brian Cranston (Hal from Malcolm in the Middle definitively casting off that character) has deservedly won armfuls of awards.

The Shield was pretty good (far from being the wire of course) but just got somewhat unbearable towards the end.
I liked Rescue Me much better than the Shield.
Other good shows - Burn Notice, Deadwood, Sons of Anarchy was/is pretty good, Oz was really good.
Dexter is definitely an awesome show. I can't wait to get those dvds on netflix for the next season.

And Deadwood was phenomenal - it's such a shame they'll never complete it now... (don't let that put you off if you haven't seen it!)
