any thoughts on this the 2min silence? mainly from the generation that were not there
Maybe when all the survivors are dead ( 🙄 ) the two minute silence can be maintained until war is no more.
I'd rather have two minutes of silence than a stupid waste of time and money like VE day.

when did it become 2 mins?
we always had just a minutes silence at school.
the recent compulsion for excessive outpourings of public grief (since princess diana and september the 11th) have robbed such displays of any meaning.

Originally posted by catfoodtimWTF do you mean by "Americanization of grief"....we don't shoot off stupid fireworks or have laser shows in memorium of our fallen war dead. Where did you dig up this fu&%ing nonsense, some stupid Irish-Socialist magazine?...did Ragnorak tell you this?....I'll have to spank him for this "tall-tale". While we may have flowers and flags on graves, and maybe a small parade with aging veterans trudging along, I've never seen "fireworks" and "lasershows". Now, the 4th of July is another story....and a day of silence and non-activity should be the norm for remembering the millions of fallen brave men/women over the years...
we always had a minutes silence, never two, that's why i was surprised at it being 2 minutes today.
i still maintain we're expected to publically grieve more and more, and the more we do it the less it means.
don't get me wrong, we should celebrate November 11th until war is no more - as BDN says. but without the laser shows and mounds of flowers.
this americanisation of grief only cheapens any tragic occasion.
