well, the new controversial law came into effect today in the UK allowing pubs, clubs, restaurants and supermarkets to sell alcohol 24 hours a day may sound good to some (mainly our alcoholics) but to others this is just plain stupidity. Makes me wonder why this has been allowed surely it has nothing to do with the incredibly overtaxed beer? or maybe the government thought the people are responsible enough to drink sensibly? but against the advice of hospitals, doctors, paramedics, nurses and the police it still went ahead.
so what does everone else think? Good or bad?

Good.

It is about time the UK repealled its restrictive drinking laws introduced during the war.

It has only taken the UK 60 years to catch up with the rest of Europe with civilised drinking hours.

I'll drink to that!

By increasing the drinking hours, you're going to make the pub less sociable between 19:00 hours and 22:30 hours.

Here in Holland the pubs are only busy at the weekends and even then they don't get busy until 23:30 in most places.

Is that what you want?
I personally like the British pub culture, but expanding the hours during the week is going to destroy it.

However...24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE!!!

Remember when pubs used to close in the evenings in the UK, remember the controversy over relaxing the law.

The control freaks all screeching and pulling their hair out "rawwwwwk the people are going to turn into alcoholics rawwwwwk tooo much freedom rawwwwk"

If anything drinking on average became more responsible.

Remember the infamous '6 o'clock swill' in New Zealand, workers were sculling 5 jugs before the pub closed, same thing relax the hours and overall the result was more responsible drinking (although I do wonder if some of the effects of the 6 o'clock swill can still be seen in some kiwi drinkers)

You need to stop reading the Daily Mail!

I've waited for today for a long time.
I've never understood why the government, or any fat bouncer can stop me buying a drink because of the time of day. The old law was devoid of logic.

As someone who finishes work at 11pm I can now go for a pint after work. Equal opportunity at last.

If they had introduced this law 20 years ago, I wouldn't have wasted all that money getting into terrible nightclubs.

Cheers everyone!

The only thing I'm concerned about is that it will kill pub atmosphere, like Shav said.
Who wants to drink in a lifeless pub?

I agree that it shouldn't matter what time of day you buy/consume alcohol. However, since the vast majority of the public in the UK are about as responsible and intelligent as a paper bag, I wouldn't be surprised if they took this change in the law to mean it's time to get as absolutley munted as possible for the forseable short term.

On another point, the tube system needs to run 24 hrs in London to keep up with this, or otherwise the pubs aren't going to bother being open all night. Although I think it will mean a decrease in club going and an increase in pub attendance, when people can be reasonably likely to get home on a night bus, which isn't a bad thing necessarily (I hope that it will mean dance music becomes less popular...).

Personally I couldn't care less whether the pubs are open 24 hrs a day. If only combatting youth-culture binge drinking was better handled I'd possibly even welcome it.

Of course, if the tubes/buses didn't run then the change in opening hours might not make that much difference in the cities.
In villages the pubs stay open as long as they like anyway.

i think in a lot of places there will be no change in how things are done for the most part, and in a couple of months people will realise they no longer need to knock back x number of pints in an allotted time

it just means that the pubs near me don't need to have illegal lockins

They'll probably keep up pretences anyway so that the seasoned mob don't get the jitters at the sight of an unlocked door.

Here on the border of Mexico we used to have 24/7 drinking times on the bars. I used to get on one of those drinking binges and stay there all weekend. At 4 in the A.M. I was usually the only dumb bastard there. If people want to have drink at any time I'm all for that. Then again I'm also for leagalized gambling, prostitution, and marijuana.
