The majority of those who debate in the RHP forums are mature, grown people. Generally, at least for me, the term "mature" implies restraint from the petty actions that have plagued these debate threads. Name-calling. Condescension. (Intentionally incorrect) paraphrasing. I admit that I am guilty of each of these in more than one way. However, I am proposing a humble challenge to each of us to stop this petty immaturity. Without such simple guidelines, the point of debates has failed. Nobody seems to care any more. Nobody listens any more. In the midst of the petty bickering, the intent of the issues at debate are worthless. The intentional refusal to meet these simple criteria simply demonstrates laziness, apathy, and/or genuine immaturity. Such reasons have alienated so many from the debate forums, me (nearly) included.

It may sound cheesy, but then again, isn't the whole idea of an online debate somewhat cheesy?

I have noticed that the best debaters on this forum are able to let personal digs and immaturity go by and not get worked up about it.

I definitely do not consider myself one of the best debaters. 😉

I see your point; however, there is only so much one can take. I guess each person has their limit.

Some people love to bait people into anger... of course, those posts are some of the best to read at times 🙂

Maybe you could just send me my posts in advance. I'll cut and paste and you'll never be offended.

The majority who debate here are actually very immature children .. like you for instance. Generally, at least for me, the term "immature" implies a self-assured yet naive person.

You miss the point .. you want debate? You'll find it in your schooling most likely .. not an internet chess site.
This is simply a slagging forum desinged for Euros and Americans to beat crap out of each other.

It is what it is.

In what ways have I been so "very immature," please, list them.

Am I being so "very immature" simply because I am arguing my opinions?

No, you're naive/immatue in that you expect to find "honest debate" on an internet chess site.

Your opinions are your own and you are certainly entitled to them.

I think you're very young (right?) and short on life experence.

As I have come to discover, you are right on that first issue. I didn't expect a debate comparable to a live debate, but I really didn't expect such blatant belligerance.

It just goes to show how few people still hold true to the old saying of being the "same behind closed doors." Maybe I owe you that much in revealing that to me.

This forum wouldn't be here if it didn't generate some business for the owners.
If not for the USA v Euro, Liberal v Conservative, Religious v Atheist slagging matches it would be a waste of bandwidth.
It generates interest and controversy. It brings people in .. witness how many don't even play chess yet post constantly.

It's interesting .. but it's not really a debate forum IMO

... BTW, nice advance in your chess rating, you've jumped 200 pts since we played our 2 draws.

I have hope for you or I wouldn't bother.
I suspect you'll learn, at least you seem bright and curious to me.
Keep it up, and enjoy Japan (I spent 2 yrs)

I assume this is like a truce? (I know, I'm assuming...) Sounds good to me.

Thanks for the encouragement, and for the patience.

I respect and appreciate your opinions and your experiences, even if I don't currently agree with them. Time will tell.

In light of this new knowledge you have given me, I have imposed a self-ban on the Debate Forum threads as of tomorrow. I'll be interested in seeing how long that lasts.

Anyway, I appreciate the sincerity.

Not being mature is fun, dude.

For mature debate, where my neck is at stake, I have enough with my job.

I come here for fun, and sometimes I get all serious and exchange
arguments and certainly have a very nice time, particularly with
educated, toughtful users, i.e. Wheely, RSMA, Merk, etc.

But the reality is that I always end up not resisting to the temptation
of making uptight, anal retentives angry, i.e. Red, shav, etc.

To each its own. Some come for fun... and how to get the fun depends
on each person, as well as the mood.

At least that's the way it is with me...

Ha.ha, good post, but why are Americans and Europeans wasting their time and energy beating the crap out of each other when both are under theat from the most dangerous crap ever preached in the name of the Almighy?

That's because most of them still think it is a religion of peace. ROTFLMAO

I dunno, I kind of agree with Witty, maybe reasonable debate etc won't be found on a chess site, maybe the purpose ofthis sites forums (fora? forae?) is to just have fun, that's great.
But, when I first started posting, I saw the different forums, general, posers, etc. and figured that the slagging would be kept in one, while actual debate and sharing of ideas went on in another.
Of course, that's not what happens, I find fully grown men resorting to name-calling (which ain't a bad thing, but at least make it imaginitive!)
I dunno, anyone know of any internet fora that offer real debate?
I haven't found one yet, and I really want to. A debate where everyone simply disagrees is not a debate, it's a soapbox.
