Actually criminals have often been idealized in US culture; Earl brings up the Roaring Twenties (true enough) but the "heroes" of the old West were Billy the Kid and the gunslingers.
So there is nothing new in the US about a "culture" that idolizes certain lawbreakers. And there is certainly nothing new about racists here trying to codeword their racism towards blacks by saying they're not against them but their "culture" though there exists pathetically little evidence that blacks in the US have any major cultural differences from whites (they might be a bit more religious).
