This is true, men (statistically) are more likely to get murdered walking the streets at night.
But we're not just talking about murders. How do the men/women stats compare for rape or abuse? A woman should be able to get from point A to point B without fear for her safety.
At night I would happily go to the local shop to buy a bottle of milk with not a single concern in my head about my safety or fear of being sexually harassed. My wife would not feel safe doing the same. I'm sure this is not unique to the UK.

My wife and I were on vaca in Mexico. She wanted to do the look-see in a wide open bazaar, middle of the day. Bright sun!
So I told her to go ahead, I'll be right here in this pub getting out of the sun. She showed up later on and told me
of the times she was harassed by strange men and was truly concerned.
