A long, long, time ago (like 2018), a government contractor at the IRS leaked significant portions of Donald Trump's tax returns as well as those of many wealthy individuals. These showed that Trump had been lying for years about his taxes; in many years he had paid nothing or minimal amounts contrary to his public claims.
So last year Trump, while he is President, decided to sue the IRS for $10 billion for sullying his reputation by carelessly allowing the truth to come out. The DOJ had to defend that suit as it does any suit against the government. But the judge handling the suit in a hearing last month pointedly questioned whether the parties were "adverse" to each other as legally required because, after all, Trump is the head of the US Executive Branch and the DOJ is part of that making it directly under Trump's control (the present head of the DOJ is one of Trump's former personal lawyers). She gave the parties a May 20th deadline to submit briefs as to why she shouldn't dismiss the case for lack of adversity between the parties.
Now when a judge does something like this, the party defending the lawsuit normally files a brief supporting dismissal as the DOJ, which is supposed to represent the American People not Donald Trump, should do. Instead, DOJ and IRS lawyers are reportedly cooking up a plan that would settle the matter before that deadline even though the judge clearly indicated that dismissal is likely.
What would be the terms?:
"ABC reports the settlement would force the government to create a $1.7 billion fund to compensate people who claim to have been victims of the Biden administration’s purported “weaponization” of the Justice Department, including Jan. 6 rioters, while the Times reports any settlement could also involve the IRS dropping its ongoing audits of the president and his businesses."

Moreover:
"The commission overseeing the compensation fund would have the total authority to hand out approximately $1.7 billion in taxpayer funds to settle claims brought by anyone who alleges they were harmed by the Biden administration's "weaponization" of the legal system, including the nearly 1,600 individuals charged in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol attack as well as potentially entities associated with President Trump himself.
"The arrangement would be an unprecedented use of taxpayer dollars with little oversight. Under the terms of the potential settlement agreement, President Trump would have the authority to remove members of the commission running the fund without cause, and the commission would be under no obligation to disclose its procedures or decision-making process for awarding more than a billion dollars, the sources said. "

I mean WTF? Here we have a meritless law suit almost certainly about to be tossed out and the government is going to give $1.7 billion of taxpayer money for Donald Trump to dole out to his own businesses, rioters and anybody else he deems worthy (big contributors to his schemes come on down!)?
I was hoping that the judge could simply refuse to allow such a settlement, but it appears that the lawsuit itself will be unconditionally dropped and there will be a separate deal made with the IRS which is beyond this court's review.
Everybody here OK with this?

@Mott-The-Hoople saidThe jan 6 rioters were violent criminals. Dozens of them are now back in prison after trump let them out because they committed another crime.

Did Trump violate any of our laws?
Did the IRS employee violate any of our laws?
@Mott-The-Hoople saidI think the employee leak was indeed illegal, to start with, but still, citizens still retain legal rights,

and if people were improperly targeted politically, compensation is not automatically unreasonable. Give it to them. So to marauder, this is not a pretty picture, but we have to be a bit realistic since this is the president of the United States being in charge of both agencies.
Even if the leak was wrong and deserved consequences, it is most inappropriate for a sitting president to be negotiating massive taxpayerfunded settlements which involve agencies that he directly controls, especially when the country has more urgent priorities.
If you all did not hate Trump so much, and want him to fail, which you fo, I have a feeling you would say “why is presidential energy going into all this when our country has larger issues. We need him on the front lines.. “ Lifeis not perfect, and none of our presidents are perfect. Obama and Biden entered the White House with average assets, and now have millions of dollars. I have more houses than Biden does, but he is one heck of a lot richer . Somebody ought to do a thread on that, I won’t need to read it.

Oh, he writes and sprinkles links a lot, but he will not answer.
Sunhouse will answer, by God. If you ask him if January 6 was an insurrection, he will give you a flat yes. Of course it was not, but he will answer you a yes or no just about every time.!!!!!
@no1marauder saidThis is classic. Republican administrations have always dropped programs meant to help minorities and the poor in favor of kickbacks to their buddies. The massive corruption of this administration in particular drives this trend off the charts.

Donald Trump and his allies have created far more victims than the Biden Administration ever did. People complaining they've been harmed by Biden policies are clearly looking for handouts the Republicans are only to happy to provide, while ignoring the multitudes harmed directly by Trump's policies.
So much for the Oversight Committee. More like the Overreach Committee.
And hell no, I'm not okay with this. The corruption needs to end.
When is too much finally enough?

@Mott-The-Hoople saidBiden didn't "weaponize" anything.

Government agencies were doing their jobs investigating crime committed by the president. This is probably the main reason Musk was called in, to eliminate government employees who were just doing their jobs and doing them well.
The massive weaponization of the Federal Government did not begin until Donald Trump took office, so that he could go after his political enemies. Of course Musk was part of that, along with the DOJ and the FBI. The people left in these agencies after Musk took a flaming sword to them could barely tie their own shoes. He helped make Fed government "suck again".
@AverageJoe1 saidOf course it was. And Trump's forgiveness of those who broke the law that day enabled some of these dangers to America to actually run for office, which the 14th Amendment prohibits.

And IF anyone was damaged by illegal acts done under Biden they should seek legal recourse using established methods not benefit from a slush fund to be doled out by Trump at his sole discretion.
