A MAJOR crackdown on animal cruelty was announced yesterday torturers will face life bans from keeping pets, doubled jail terms(up to six months) and £20,000 fines, after a dalmatian was hanged from a tree. Two youths were arrested yesterday. SPOT the dalmatian was probably hanged in a sick new twist on “happy slapping”, cops said yesterday. Police arrested two youths and confiscated two camera phones for analysis. The youths, aged 18 and 19, were quizzed about Spot’s agonising death. This story was printed in the sun news paper who have started to name and shame animal tortures. Anyone else think the punishment is a bit lame?

Yes, a life ban does seem extreme. That said I think this behavior merits some harsh punishment. More to the point, these people need some therapy. I never understood why some people revel in making things suffer. I'm not talking about hunters or steak eaters. I'm talking about a few people I met that really got pleasure from torturing things.

Sick in the head, I tell you.

BTW: What is "happy slapping"?

Torturing of animals for pleasure is just one of the many things that seperate we "superior" humans from animals. I believe they should be left to the mercy of predatory carnivores who are a bit hungry, like sharks, lions etc...

Anyone who does something like that to an animal should be severly punished.
But does it include boiling lobsters alive, I wonder?

As for the Sun and it's naming and shaming...they should go to prison. Remember the incident with the pedophiles? That was truly horrific. Whipping people up into an idiotic frenzy like that is not only criminal (Ruwanda anyone?) and irrisponsible, it is also very misguided and vicious.

Only six months? That's a travesty.

Lame it is.
It's specie "ism" that animals are treated any differently than humans.😕
Criminal acts against animals should receive the same punishment as a criminal act against a human.

I agree totally. The only thing that differentiates us from animals(save human kinds propensity for mindless evil) is essentally intelligence. Yet there clearly are severely retarded humans whose IQ truly is equal to that of say a dog perhaps. If someone were to torture and kill a mentally retarded human most people would be outraged, and there would be no consideration of a lighter sentance because the victim was "just a retarded person". Yet this is often the logic applied to animals. Indeed "specie-ism" is an excellent point. It is this very devicive aspect of of thought "us vs. them" that creates racism and nationalism both of which have brought untold misery for mankind. In "specie-ism we extend our pathos onto animal-kind.

I'm all for keeping shoplifters out of prison and putting these people in the vacated cellspace.

I wish that were true. 🙁 Here's a page on the murder of autistic people, showing that killing an autistic person is indeed very often seen as less grave than killing a "normal" person: http://www.geocities.com/growingjoel/murder.html
You could probably find similar information on other disabilities.

Wouldn't do it myself, don't see the attraction in making undeserving things suffer.
That said I do find it hard to give a toss for a couple of animals i find it small fry given the millions of animals slaughtered for our other needs, let alone in the big scheme of human suffering.
