(AP) OAKLAND, Calif. — Dozens of police maintained a late-night guard around City Hall following daylong protests that resulted in 300 arrests. Occupy Oakland demonstrators broke into the historic building and burned a U.S. flag, as officers earlier fired tear gas to disperse people throwing rocks and tearing down fencing at a convention center.

Saturday's protests — the most turbulent since Oakland police forcefully dismantled an Occupy encampment in November — came just days after the group said it planned to use a vacant building as a social center and political hub and threatened to try to shut down the port, occupy the airport and take over City Hall.

Protesters clashed with police throughout the day, at times throwing rocks, bottles and other objects at officers. And police responded by deploying smoke, tear gas and bean bag rounds, City Administrator Deanna Santanta said.

They have had the Arabian Spring movement. That worked well.
Now there is an American Spring going. Perhaps this will work too...?

Well, if you have lots of unemployed youths, violent protests tend to erupt because they are bored and angry. This is hardly something unexpected.

Its been argued vehemently right here in this forum that the protesters are not violent and have been compared to the peaceful tea party movement. Which there is no similarity btw.
At least you admit they are violent because they are bored and angry.

They started peacefully but were met with violence.... voilence begets violence.

It's now entering a new phase and with new tactics from either side. We know what happens when movements and groups turn violent.

But remember this, the State and all of it's resources are always the most violent, underhanded and most resourceful of all opponents and can't be defeated by small groups like these.

It'll take some heavy handed tactics from some V.I.P.E.R squads on normal middle america until people will want something done about what is happening to constitutional rights but by then it wiill be too late.

Hand in your guns people, have your I.D cards ready!!!

Surely violent protesters are examples of "violent protesters" and peaceful occupiers are examples of "peaceful occupiers"? Your thread title seems to suggest that "violent protesters" are examples of "peaceful occupiers", which strikes me as a bit misleading.

Is that how it works ? So if I decide to participate in illegal activity and the police tell me to stop and I respond with a "F-you pig ! Try making me stop ! " Followed by me getting pepper sprayed or hit with a bean bag I can go off on them ? Throw rocks and bottles at them ? Thanks for the insight. Thats good to know. I'll be sure to explain to the judge that violence begets violence.

These peaceful occupiers had better be glad that it is politically correct police officers assigned to stop them.

Armed citizens who eventually have to pay for their damage may prove to be a lot less understanding and patient.

Why do you assume the armed citizens of Oakland are sympathetic to politically incorrect police who suppress protesters?

Demonstrators break into a building with the intent of putting it to long term use as their new headquarters. Once inside they destroy a children's art exhibit. Nice.

The police are not politically incorrect enough. Smoke, tear gas and bean bags are soft peddling.

2pac assumed room temperature a few years back and is not relevant. Dre might be less than tolerant of occupiers if they camped out in front of his house, and vandalized his property. I'd put my money on the Michigan Militia over the ragtag bunch in that video.

The Michigan Militia is in Michigan isn't it?
