Sounds like a noble cause, until you see how it is that the corrupt leftists run the program.

Basic Income Programs in Marin County and Oakland Exclude White People. Is That Legal?

Basic income pilot programs are proliferating throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
The goal is to empower poor families with unconditional cash grants.

But there's a catch: You aren't eligible if you're white.

The blubbering from right wingers about supposed "racism" against white people seems to be a never ending symphony on this Forum.

A private organization funds an anti-poverty research program targeting groups in a city who make about 1/3 what white families do. "Racism"? Ridiculous.

It is a completely fair concern that there is literal discrimination against a racial group and pandering to narratives about grievances in order to justify this kind of spending.

It would be a bit much to suggest that there is no basis for targeting the black community with benefits as they have been largely disenfranchised historically, but it flies in the face of a colorblind and egalitarian society to take such features as race as viable means for discrimination...

If we do do it here, though, then it is the case that it justifies others who treat it as a basis for distinction in their own political systems. When race becomes a focal point of one group, it becomes impossible to ignore.

It does seem a little tainted to me.

Just one question: How many black people go to your church?

I find it hard to believe that there are no equally destitute White people in the SF Bay Area.

We occasionally share our Cathedral with the Ethiopian Orthodox Tawahedo Church, and also share our Easter Celebrations with them, but generally speaking, our Church 2/3 Korean, 1/3 Western (mostly Slavic).

[quote]Limiting eligibility of these programs by race could well prove legally problematic, says Walter Olson, a legal expert at the Cato Institute. The U.S. and California constitutions, he notes, generally prohibit race-selective programs and public services.

This is particularly true of Marin County's decision to award public funding to its local basic income pilot program.

"The structure of the program is racially discriminatory. It will probably not make it over the threshold for when government is allowed to discriminate," Olson says, telling Reason that governments can generally only discriminate along racial lines when implementing programs narrowly aimed at righting past discriminatory behavior by that same government.[/quote\

Targeting a disadvantaged group is one thing but given that it’s a pilot scheme and the idea is to gather data on the effectiveness of a basic income policy it’s a bit shortsighted to exclude the destitute white community.
It would be informative to get data on how all the ethnic groups fare under the policy and if there are different outcomes for different groups it would be worthwhile trying to figure out what other factors influenced the outcomes.
Seems like it might be limiting its useful data stream going forward, but extra money going to poor people especially a group as disadvantaged in so many ways as people of colour is never a bad thing.

The latest figures available indicate it has 77,347 people living in poverty in Oakland of which less than 10,000 are white.https://www.welfareinfo.org/poverty-rate/california/oakland Given that the pilot program is limited to 600 families, a representative sample would include about 75 white families at best which would not yield any statistical useful data.
