Evan Neumann: US Capitol riot suspect gets asylum in Belarus
A California man suspected of taking part in the US Capitol riots last year has been granted asylum in Belarus.
Evan Neumann fled the US after being charged in connection with the riots.
The 48-year-old first settled in Ukraine, before reaching Belarus where he asked for asylum - claiming he faced "political persecution" in the US.
A Belarusian official said Mr Neumann has been granted permission to remain in the country "indefinitely".
@vivify saidGood, as long as he stays there.

The bigger picture:
Belarus has come under Russian influence. They hijacked a foreign plane to turn over a political dissident to Putin. Now they're harboring a rioter who partook in insurrection for Trump....another guy who does Putin's biding.
This seems like a wink toward Trump; that he's still on Putin's agenda.
Something's going on here. Where did that Trump supporter get the idea to flee to Belarus, of all places? Why was this guy so positive that this pro-Russian country would be a safe place for him?
There's more to this story,

@vivify saidWhen Trump first started talking Putin up in 2016, his supporters paused for a hot second, and then they went all in, like they needed someone to tell them what to think. All because he was parroting what they and Fox News were saying about Hillary, so they figured that he knew what he was talking about. Fast-forward to today, where they all think Putin is some kind of hero.
This guy was interviewed on Belarusian state TV like some kind of political hero. From words of the insurrectionist:
"I am glad Belarus took care of me."
WTF is going on.
Again, thanks for nothing, Donald.
@vivify saidMy guess would be he was getting his orders from Putin when he went to the Capitol bldg. he’s basically a traitor who’s been taken home by his handlers.

How lucky is he that the US doesn’t treat its dissenters the way that Belarus treats theirs. The man’s a scumbag and a coward.
@kevcvs57 saidDo you remember during Trump's presidency when protestors were found being dragged into unmarked law enforcement vehicles? People accused Trump of having "secret police".

I do remember that.
@vivify saidAhhhh… Belarus… another one of those countries nobody can point out on a bloody map.

How the hell did a republican manage to find the bloody place?

Neumann didn't flee to Belarus "of all places"; he "first settled in Ukraine."
I find nothing saying he was granted "political asylum"; the article says "an immigration official handing Mr Neumann a document confirming his refugee status". Nor is it particularly shocking that Belarus didn't hand him over to face charges in the US since "Belarus does not have an extradition treaty with the US."
And he's been in Belarus since last August!
This really seems like a rather trivial nothingburger.

@no1marauder saidOh well I wonder why he got a spot on Belorussian state tv then, it must have been a nothing burger night.

I remember a news report from the BBC, he was comparing Belorussian freedom to the US version and came down on the side of the Belorussian version.
This was about not long after Belorussian security services were beating and raping young protestors, and forcing down international flights in order to arrest a journalist and his girlfriend.
Are you actually ok?
@shavixmir saidWe can now it sits right on Polands border to its west and it’s got Ukraine on its southern border, an obvious place for Putin’s expansionist plans.

@kevcvs57 saidNATO expanded. Russia is just getting back what was theirs before Obama stole it by coup. If Russia took Texas by coup do you think the USA would do nothing? The USA would take it back by any means and you know it.

Stop being a hypocrite. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. Did the UK take back the Falkland Islands? How is that different?
@metal-brain saidStop lying and stop being stupid

Ukraine does not belong to Russia it belongs to the Ukrainians.

The difference is that Argentines military junta invaded a peaceful (but disputed) territory with over whelming force.
The UKs task force ousted them and consequently the junta fell. So good news for the sheep farmers of the Falklands and the people of Argentina.
The fact that the UK govt has not handed the territory to the democratically elected government of Argentina is problematic to say the least. I can only guess that the US government has a strategic use for those islands in the South Atlantic 🤷🏻♂️
The other obvious difference was the distinct lack of dead civilians and millions of refugees, idiot.
