Maybe he means Fogel then.
You can't deny how weak and pathetic the administration looks right now.
@booger saidIt was a good deal and should have been done months ago.

@quackquack saidBout has already served almost 15 years and would have probably been released within another 5 or so. Griner would have rotted in a Russian prison for 10 years for having a small amount of a recreational drug.
You protect your citizen by keeping people like Victor Bout in prison. One of the all time terrible sports trades.
A good deal.
@no1marauder saidIt's a terrible deal. If we got back a government worker or a solder I'd accept that we maybe we have to make deals. But, we released a dangerous person so we could get back a drug user. The world is a less safe place.

A "drug user"? She had vape cartridges containing hashish oil! A civilized country doesn't leave its citizens in a foreign prison for such a minor offense for 10 years without making any attempt to free them. BTW, Griner has represented the US like a "government worker"; she played for the US national women's basketball team and helped it win Olympic Gold medals in 2016 and 2020. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brittney_Griner
There's plenty of arms dealers; heck, we've been cutting a bunch of them checks for decades. Bout wasn't even caught in a real arms deal but an FBI sting. The value of having him in prison for a few more years is negligible.
@no1marauder saidYes now they know they can get anyone for a nobody who plays a sport nobody watches.
I would add that any indication of fruitful contacts between the US and Russia is a good thing.
@no1marauder saidIf you want to call someone an idiot, look in the mirror.

Russia is in the middle of one of the most unjustified wars in recent memory. But you advocate freeing an arms dealer in exchange for an idiot who violated the drug laws of the country she was in. It's had to even argue that it's a moronic trade and the free world is less safe because of it.
@quackquack saidIt is ironic beyond belief to claim that a single person should endure a decade of unjust incarceration for some dubious supposed benefit to the "free world".

@earl-of-trumps saidHe was in Russia for a wedding and had no ties to US intelligence, his conviction was a sham.
Good for Griner.
Whalen was convicted on espionage charges.
You want to play the game, you pay the fiddler. No sympathy for him. really
@no1marauder saidIt is beyond belief that we should free someone who is dangerous to the whole world because you arrogantly believe you should be able tell other countries the appropriate criminal sentence for a crime committed in their borders.

@quackquack saidI’m no fan of bout he’s got rich by drenching himself in mainly third world blood but so do both our governments. As far as I know we are both still selling arms to the Saudis and a group of other unsavoury regimes.

I also very much doubt the illegal arms sales business dropped off due to bouts incarceration or that it will noticeably increase now that he’s free.
It’s a pity they couldn’t hold out for whelan but it is what it is.
