Capitalism may be to blame for the lack of life on Mars, Venezuela's socialist president Hugo Chavez says.

"I have always said, heard, that it would not be strange that there had been civilisation on Mars, but maybe capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived and finished off the planet," Mr Chavez said in a speech to mark World Water Day.

It's your sincere belief that Chavez's comment was serious rather than ironic?

Why not take his remarks at face value? It doesn't detract from their worth.

Capitalism will turn this planet into a barren wasteland one day.

This might help:

1.1 billion people live without clean drinking water

2.6 billion people lack adequate sanitation (2002, UNICEF/WHO JMP 2004)

1.8 million people die every year from diarrhoeal diseases.

3 900 children die every day from water borne diseases (WHO 2004)

Daily per capita use of water in residential areas:

- 350 litres in North America and Japan

- 200 litres in Europe

- 10-20 litres in sub-Saharan Africa

Something for you and Michelle Malkin to consider if you're not too busy yukking it up about how crazy Chavez is.

That's a bit pessimistic. Aren't there any alternatives to capitalism?

Thanks I'm familiar with all these figures. Humanity is a cancer on the face of Mother Earth.

Or did some Martians escape from their dying planet to Earth, bringing capitalism with them? Maybe it's not our fault ...

If capitalism is left unchecked...

Of course there are alternatives. It remains to be seen if we have the fortitude to break the ever escalating cycle of consumerism.

The first target is the People's Democratic Republic of China. Deng said, It is glorious to be rich! Now more than a billion Chinese think the same way -- and they're damming up every river in sight to feed their insatiable demand for energy -- energy in service of the State Capitalist Machine.

Non sequitur.
