The thing that bothers me about David Blunkett is the degree to which he dominated the Private Eye Christmas Edition.

they always wait till after question time in parliment so a week passes, very cynical anyway makes no difference as they will look after him in someway, unlike the voters who get sh*t on and left to fend for themselves.

I've always found that for someone who, being blind and a socialist, you'd think would champion tolerance and social unity, he is in fact a complete fascist git. I am glad he's out, maybe now this nonsense of ID cards will slowly slip from the agenda.

I'm not after a fight, but could you explain your objection to the ID card? I wasn't too keen on the idea when I lived in the UK solely out of anti-big brother ideas, but after living in Belgium where ID cards exist I've found them not only harmless but useful.

What does an honest person have to fear from having to carry an ID card. Apart from anything else, it could replace your driving licence, passport, video club card etc. all in one - pretty handy.

I shall start a thread where I shall be happy to continue this conversation 🙂

I don't think Blunkett, by any stretch of the definition of the word, could be considered a socialist.

Not now perhaps, but he was certainly a strong supporter of socialism in his former years.

Dunno about that. When he was leader of Sheffield council, he was a hero of the soft left of the labour party.
I guess it just depends on what you define as a socialist.
Like all these New Labour clones, he said what had to be said for career purposes in the early days of his career. If that meant mouthing left-wing politics, then that's what he did (For example, Tony Bliar, amongst others, was a member of CND)

Well said!
You took the words out of my mouth!

He also used his powers as home secretary to send a chief of police round to a school to warn two 12 year old boys who had rung the doorbell of his mistress and run away.
What an abuse of power!!!!

The law lords have just overruled his policy of imprisonment without trial for terror suspects.
Blunkett was as bad as Bush in terms of being a right wing lying bastard.

We could wonder why he had to go ..... because of this "mistress" thingy or because the law lords were going to trash this aspect of his policies.

Charles Clarke his replacement has said he supports Blunkett's ID card policy, and it wouldn't have become an official policy proposal unless Blair supported it as well, so Blunkett's departure will have little effect on the ID card issue.

Is this the guy (MP) who is pulling for the terrorists in Iraq? If not who is that? I heard of one guy who "Supports fully the right of an invaded populace (in Iraq) to kill british soldiers".

What a wonderful guy.
