Well Chavez doesn't quite control all the press in Venezuela. There is Globovision. They are critical of Chavez. Of course he did directly threaten to shut them down. Still the opposition does currently have media outlets. We'll see what happens.

and now that term limits have been abolished he's basically unstoppable, thats my point.
Unfortunately, left-wing enthusiasts think Chavez is a democrat, and if you have a look at his history you'll see that he'll do anything to stay in power.

The press in Venezuela is overwhelmingly anti-Chavez. Even if it wasn't, the idea that people are sheep who simply do what someone else tells them is a peculiar one.

Isn't that a magnificent contribution to freedom of speech?

It's scary to say the least. Of course threatening and actually doing it are two different things. I'll take a wait and see approach before condemning him for it but I admit it doesn't look promising.

The people abolished term limits. The opposition doesn't seem particularly intimidated or the media very passive.

I realize it's tough for a right wing elitist like you when the "ignorant peasants" vote for somebody the Economist and Wall Street Journal don't like. You have my sympathy and the Venezuelan people have my congratulations.

It would seem that Venezuela's opposition controls about 80% of the newspapers and TV channels. It does rather put Chavez's popularity in perspective, wouldn't you say?

I thought you were talking about America, since they don't have republicans and democrats in venezuela.

Unfortunately, communists always end up turning into something that resembles the fascist they claim to abhor.

As long as future elections are still free elections and they can regain something that resembles a free press, it will probably work out fine eventually. If they stop being free elections, then fascism it will be. Doesn't matter whos in charge.
