I have a feeling that as long as Chavez controls the press, the people will keep choosing him for a long time to come.

Unfortunately, left-wing enthusiasts think Chavez is a democrat, and if you have a look at his history you'll see that he'll do anything to stay in power.

Isn't that a magnificent contribution to freedom of speech?
Originally posted by generalissimoIt's scary to say the least. Of course threatening and actually doing it are two different things. I'll take a wait and see approach before condemning him for it but I admit it doesn't look promising.

Originally posted by generalissimoThe people abolished term limits. The opposition doesn't seem particularly intimidated or the media very passive.
yeah, like abolishing term limits, censuring the media, intimidating the opposition, spreading propaganda in schools, etc...
I realize it's tough for a right wing elitist like you when the "ignorant peasants" vote for somebody the Economist and Wall Street Journal don't like. You have my sympathy and the Venezuelan people have my congratulations.
Originally posted by UllrIt would seem that Venezuela's opposition controls about 80% of the newspapers and TV channels. It does rather put Chavez's popularity in perspective, wouldn't you say?

Unfortunately, communists always end up turning into something that resembles the fascist they claim to abhor.
As long as future elections are still free elections and they can regain something that resembles a free press, it will probably work out fine eventually. If they stop being free elections, then fascism it will be. Doesn't matter whos in charge.
