If Iraq is as important to us as W says, let's draft a large army and use it to get this war over with. If it's not important enough to have a draft, let's get out of Iraq as soon as possible. In other words, let's do it right or not at all!

Instead of a draft, how about allowing foreign nationals (eg. Mexicans) the opportunity to serve in the US armed forces in exchange for citizenship? Informed tactical decisions would keep the number of new citizens to a minimum, while saving lives of real US citizens.

😲

Wow, I hope that that was a joke.

As a European who was against the declaration of war in the first place (and still believe it was a pretty silly thing to do), I have to agree with the concept of "Now that it's started, do everything that is necessary to get it finished" Drafts aren't the only option, but whatever is needed to "get the job done" should be done. Not just by the US either I have to say.

This assumes that putting more troops in Iraq would get the job done.

Good idea, but sadly, Mexicans are too valuable to expend on the battlefield.

Maybe we could recruit Palestinians instead.

Haven't you been paying attention -- a draft is unnecessary since the Surge is working.

It can't be finished. Unless you are advocating killing everyone.

Because that's what is meant by, "finishing the job". But for every one you kill you create how many more? Never ending

Sorry, that's not what I meant by finishing the job clearly, but it's not stepped up military action I'm necessarily proposing, moreso a commitment to see it through to the end. The "surge" cannot last indefinitely and came much too late I feel. But a strong military presence will be needed for possibly several decades to come. As long as there is a clear separation between the military troops there and the government.
It has ended in Northern Ireland for all intents and purposes, through a combined use of military policing and diplomatic reform.

Neither diplomats nor soldiers can do their jobs effectively without the other.

Foreigners can join if they have been granted permanent residence. Also I found this:

If that was in reference to me (please use reply and quote) I was saying that a soldier without a diplomat will never be able to stop fighting, while a diplomat without a soldier will never really be taken seriously.

Great idea. The war in Iraq would end due to all the draft protesters, and we would overrun Canada with all our draft dodgers and make it our 51st state without a shot fired. A win win situation.

With all our able bodied citizens in Iraq and the able minded citizens in Canada Mexico would invade us.

If you had about a hundred shoggoths and a few moveable Elder Signs, all your problems would be history.
