    Is knowledge its own reward?

There is a reward only for interesting knowledge or useful knowledge. Useless knowledge that you have no interest in is a total waste of time. Morse code has very little practical use nowadays (for most of us), but it does have a little value in terms of being able to show off. I would say let your children learn it if they want to.

I am trying to learn Mandarin and Korean and although they both have some potential practical value, I am learning purely because I find it interesting.

Nope. All they need to be taught is Marxism, how to put rubbers on bannanas by Planned Parenthood, and that the Tea Party is the root of all evil in the universe.

As sleepyguy has demonstrated knowledge is invariably brimming with it's own reward.

Morse code to the uninitiated is a secret language, which could be used by children to talk amongst themselves without parents or teachers having a clue as to the subject matter, not a good idea to commit sensitive info to paper as a curious oldie could decode the message.

Even seemingly useless knowledge can be instructive in the learning of it; there are people out there who play golf for in order to exercise the body, others do crosswords and sudoku to exercise the mind.

Or you could dispense with all that and just let the US become the 'banana republic' it has always wanted to be.

An attempt to address the apolitical OP, rather than you immediately resorting to your omnipresent/round-the-clock hobby horses, would be more interesting/entertaining.

Apolitical? The left has trained us to look to government for all our needs, whether it be health care, retirement, education, energy, etc., so don't blame Whodey. In fact, I can't even turn on the TV without the clown's Romney or Obama looking at me.

I guess I sympathize with you FMF. I would very much enjoy an apolitical thread, if it is indeed possible, but just know the unknown is a little scary for me.

This WAS an apolitical thread whodey. See if you can figure out how that changed.

Whodey's posts often demonstrate that Ignorance is its own reward...
