The Islamic Courts that control large parts of Somalia definitely worry Ethiopia and there are reports of Al-Qaeda training camps in the Islamic Courts controlled areas of Somalia. Tha's why I say it's both. The old Somali Warlords (Remember Blackhawk Down?) have been getting assistance from the U.S. since the rise of the Islamic Courts.
Is this the new front on the "war on terrorism"? Or, being that Ethiopia is a Christain nation and Somalia is Islamic, is it a war based on religion?

Maybe they just don't like each other. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
Really dunno where the "wake up" button is in here 😕

The Council of Islamic Courts are constably talking about "Greater Somalia" that does not mean a better Somalia, it means a bigger Somalia.
Somalias neighbors have large Somali poulations. This includes Ethiopia. They have declared enough Jihads on Ethiopia to get Ethiopian attention. That might not have been the best move. Unlike, western nations, it looks like declaring Jihad on a country in Africa is taken as a declaration of war. It should be. It's just war by another name.
Ethiopia has already said that their goal is to force the Council to the negotiating table with the local Somali warlords and force the Council to negotiate from a position of weakness, not strength. This probably means they will stop short of taking the country. I think they know better then to try nation building.

On the surface Jihadism appears to be a religion but if you dig a little deeper you'll soon discover that it is a totalitarian ideology, an imperialistic totalitarian ideology, disguised as a religion.
The war which is going on worldwide is not a war between religions, it is a war between ideologies. It is a war between the ideology of liberty and democracy and everything that comes with it and a totalitarian ideology which opposes (liberal interpretation of) democracy and (the liberal interpretation of) liberty.
I'm not sure whether the American and or Anglo-Saxon understanding of the term "liberal" fits the above meaning, because "liberal" is usually associated with the left in the US and Great Britain.
Originally posted by badmoonYou might not be too far off. The roles are reversed this time though. The Crusades were to "reclaim" religious lands significant to the Christian religion. Simplified, it was an attempted land grab in the supposed name of God. They tried to gain land and therefor power which equals wealth while spreading (forcing) their religion to (onto) others.

That's very similar to what the Islamic Courts have just done in Somalia and what the Taliban did in Afghanistan. They took those lands by force and stuffed their religion/law down the peoples throats.
Christianity has already had its fling with military power, Islam is having theirs now. They will eventually catch up to the times, its just a matter of how many die before it does. Their success or failure ultimately depends on if western democracies lay down on the job or fight back. We don't have to kill every Jihadi, we only have to defeat the ones that are the most powerful (biggest threats) until they evolve about 700 friggin years. Hopefully it doesn't take Islam as long as it took Christianity.
