Voting for the European Union parliament start today in the Netherlands. Voting continues in the various countries until Sunday (each country chooses which day from today until Sunday to hold the election).
Just a quick recap of the EU government:
European council: heads of state of each country: think international treaties, European integration and the larger questions concerning the EU.
European commission: the heads of
State nominate a leader, the council of the European Union selects members and the European parliament votes if they want them or not: this is the executive where plans are created and offered to parliament for voting.
Council of the European Union: national governments each appoint a minister to one of the 10 configurations (based on subject matter): this can be seen as a higher chamber and represents the state governments: they vote on proposals by the European commission.
European parliament: elected lower chamber: this is what the election is about. They vote on proposals by the European commission and can veto members of the European commission; even get rid of the leader of the commission.
It looks like there is going to be a swing to the right, like in many European countries, this election.
Like in the US, immigration is a large issue in Europe (certainly amongst the right-wing parties). But also the environment, farmers and future trade agreements.
Maybe the farming thing is just in the Netherlands.. but boy, is that ever a hot bloody topic here!
At the moment the centre right are the largest party (think democrats, but a little to their left) and the social democrats are the second largest block (think Bernie Sanders).
It’s going to be interesting if the right does do very well. Some of their rhetoric is directly in conflict with EU human rights. And of they do manage to pass regulation on stopping immigration, and nobody comes to fill in the job vacancies and the housing problems remain, what will it lead to?
The right-wing parties also know that if they push too hard, Europeans will get the kind of flashbacks that will ruin their prospectives in future elections.
The drive to the right is basically from the working class level of voters.
With many younger people voting left-wing.
Same old, same old, really.
@shavixmir saidSounds better than the US, which is basically people bitching about what color something is, instead of the nuts and bolts about it.
