Now, I don't agree with SG that it should be banned. People have all types of invasive surgeries for no good reason, and if adults want to wreck their bodies after giving fully informed consent, government shouldn't stop it.

I'm also perfectly happy to be polite to people. If a man wants me to refer to him as she or xe or they or gorp, I'll do it. What do I care?

But to the extent that the law does legitimately distinguish between men and women, it must do so based on reality, not based on what people "feel" or "want."

A person with Y chromosomes in (almost) every cellular nucleus in his body is a male, regardless of how his genitalia look. Now, if they ever figure out a gene therapy that could re-program the cellular nuclei to change the cells in his body to XX, then we can talk about changing the legal recognition of the person's sex.

I have no idea why backwards ideas such as yours should rule over established medical practice though. Certainly it gives the lie to any claim that right wingers have a coherent political belief in "limited government."
