Perhaps it is because the male brain is different than the female brain.
In any case, I do think there are inherent differences, though I would like to know why American women are represented so much higher in poker than chess, which is the opposite in other countries. And why is the nation of Georgia so highly represented by women when it was one of the most sexist members of the Soviet Union for decades in cultural terms?

"The president of Harvard University, Lawrence H. Summers, sparked an uproar at
an academic conference Friday when he said that innate differences between men
and women might be one reason fewer women succeed in science and math
careers. Summers also questioned how much of a role discrimination plays in the
dearth of female professors in science and engineering at elite universities."

In primitive hunter-gatherer societies, women had more diverse tasks than men.
In almost all animals the physical and behavioral differences between the sexes have to do with the fact that the female invests more in the pregnancy and is usually the most likely to raise the children and is not capable of having as many children as men potentially can.
I don't see why humans would be an exception.
Women are more focused on social relationships and men are more focused on things that make them look like good providers.
Women look for strength and success in school in a guy, men look for beauty and 'caring' skills in a woman.
Why is the dumb blonde more attractive than the nerd girl? Because you think shes more likely to marry you, stay at home and look after the children.

I would say that women are probably just as capable of playing chess as men, they are just less likely to be interested. So female players are more likely to come from societies where parents (especially the father) decide what their children engage in.
