Whoopi Goldberg got in trouble for saying the Holocaust wasn't about racism because it was "whites doing it to themselves".
So...is this correct? Obviously, bigotry, hate, xenophobia, the works were involved, and whether or not the Holocaust is technically racism is mere semantics. But let's get semantic: is "Jewish" an actual race?
@vivify saidDo you consider "ethnicity" to be about race?

The Jews are an ethnoreligious group, and Judaism is considered an ethnic religion.

@suzianne saidI'm aware of that. But the backlash to Whoopi's comments were enough that she had to apologize and retract her statement:

It seems many people feel that Whoopi is wrong in saying that the Holocaust wasn't "racism". Do you think she's technically correct?
@vivify saidI don't know the answer to this confusing conundrum, but to me, calling a person a jew is equiv to calling a person a Catholic. It is not a race in my opinion, but a religion. After all, their beliefs are quite diff from Christians.

It is a religious thing. AvJoe has spoken. So it shall be written, so it shall be done.
Whoopie is technically correct that "Jewish" is not a race. Americans tend to use "racism" interchangeably with "bigotry", or use "racism" to refer to forms of bigotry. For example, anti-Semitism or Muslim bigotry is often referred to as "racism".
Americans do the same with Hispanics. "Hispanic" is not a race, since there can be black Hispanics, white Hispanics, etc. Same for Latinos.
Whoopie should not have had to apologize for her Holocaust comment. It's a bit ironic she has a Jewish surname.
@vivify saidWell as mentioned the Nazis were convinced that they were a race and a race they wanted erase from Europe so I’m not sure it matters whether they are technically a race. The Holocaust was one of the worst racist atrocities in human history.

@vivify saidYou maybe technically correct but if your logic is applied the word racism loses much of its meaning.

People hate lots if different people for lots of different reasons.
Perhaps the term racism is a misnomer and the phenomenon is an illusion.
Xenophobia based hatred might be a more accurate description it seems wrong to single out hatred of someone because of their skin colour as a special category not to mention arbitrary.
@vivify saidIs Democratic a race?

Vivify and other stalwart Democrats in RHP (and elsewhere) treat non democrats like crap.
The dems LIE about non dems. The dems, in collective spirit accuse non dems of being racist!
😳
Hey Vivify... maybe you're just a fookin' racist.
@vivify saidNo, for the same reason muslim is not a race, call it an ideology or religion. It takes more than a few alluah akbhars but outsiders can convert and there is no race requirement as biden stipulates for political positions.

@averagejoe1 saidJew is a race, the Jewish religion is just that, a religion. Jews go by the old testament, Todays Christians believe both the old and new testament., known as being Jewish in faith. Then you have Messianic Jews that are Christian but think they know more about how this works that actual Jews.

Jewish can refer to a race or a religion.
@vivify saidAs the holocaust was brought about because Hitler wanted to eliminate an inferior race (his words) I dont think there is any question whether or not the holocaust was racist.

@vivify saidJudaism is not a race. You can convert to Judaism. You cannot convert to being white or black or Asian. Islam is a religion, not a race. You can convert to Islam and become a Muslim. Seems simple to me. Goldberg is correct. The Holocaust was not about racism. It was about antisemitism which is on the rise in both the U.S. and Europe. Saying it was not about racism in no way diminishes the horrors of this event. As for Hitler claiming Judaism is a race, pleas consider the source

@wajoma said"Jewish" is not just a religion, however. While you're correct about Islam, "Jewish" is both a religion and ethnicity. So the comparison to Islam doesn't apply.

Like I said, this is all semantics any way. If someone says discrimination against Muslims is racist, I'm not jumping down their through to correct them.
