Are we allowed to punish a murderer? I mean by logic isn't prison state sanctioned kidnap? even a parking fine by your lack of logic is just state sanctioned theft. I certainly believe we should kill this guy.

Obviously, many of us feel strongly about the death penalty. I, myself, though I have no problem with executing a murderer, have deep reservations about executions because of the possibility of executing an innocent person.
But hopefully we can agree that if any civilian criminal deserves ...[text shortened]... lace at the wrong time. If he was trying to make some sort of political point, he never said so.

Originally posted by utherpendragonThat's right. And abolishing the death penalty - as demonstrated by the majority of countries around the world, the passage of history, and the process of modernization and enlightenment - is a significant milestone along the road civilization and fully realized humanity. The U.S. and Indonesia are yet to abolish it. Presumably they will one day as that appears to be what the tide of history will bring about.
I know. They enjoy firing squads there.
Originally posted by utherpendragonAs usual those with worse death penalties than ours, i.e., no appeals, no due process, have the audacity to call the great USA uncivilized! WE will abolish it when no longer needed. As long as we have the Nidal Malik Hasans, John Alan Muhammads, Tookie Williamses, Garridos, John Wayne Gacys, Ted Bundys, Dahmers, Khalid SHeik Mohameds, and many other murderers alive or already executed and their sorry ass imitators or defenders the death penaly is a must and for the greater public good for evil exists in the world! Evil can only be erradicated through killing these sorry bastards!

Or do you know something I don't know about the Indonesian legal system?

They are very out of touch as is all opinions coming from there.
"Major General (ret.) Prijanto, the running mate of Fauzi Bowo for the Jakarta governor's election, complained to a prayer gathering on 2nd August of 3000 people marking the coming occasion (11th August) of the celebration of Muhammad's magical journey on a flying horse to heaven that black magic rituals were being used in the election campaign to influence voters, presumably in favour of the opposing Islamist team, led by Adang Daradjatun.
He hoped that the assembled clerics would pray to stop the effects of the voodoo and black magic rites and spells."
Originally posted by utherpendragonMany millions of people here in Indonesia take a principled stand against the death penalty, just as they do in more "modern" part of the world like Europe, North America. But I would expect that within 20 years it will be phased out and then abolished.
what do you expect coming from Indonesia?
