I wonder if he could swim; I read a book on Magellan's circumnavigation of the globe which said that few sailors on Spanish ships were able to.

You'd be surprised how many fisherman and I know many of them that can't swim. They claim it wouldn't matter if they hit the Atlantic Ocean frigid waters even wearing a life jacket. They would have to be rescued very quickly by other fisherman close enough to get to them in time.
