Karjakin banned because ukraine war

Debates

FIDE's decision to ban (for 6 months) Karjakin because of his announcements concerning the Ukraine war does not provide any links or references or quotations of Karjakin's announcements. Neither does FIDE provide any public analysis of Karjakin's announcements.

I am worried about whether FIDE applies its principles universally, as it should, or applies them selectively.

I have never heard of FIDE banning any chess player for supporting the US invasion of Afghanistan or Iraq. The occupation of Iraq has lasted for 19 years now. Millions of people have been killed in that war. No American sportsmen have been hindered from participating in international tournaments.

My remarks do NOT justify wars. Quite to the contrary, I am complaining that I simply do not believe that FIDE is against wars in general. FIDE-s behaviour seems to be seriously biased and as such, it damages the reputation of the chessgame.

You shouldn't be surprised; Russian and Belarusian athletes were barred from the Paralympics because of the war. https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/33410388/russian-belarusian-athletes-banned-winter-paralympic-games

@no1marauder

Perhaps the winter Olympic games in China in 2022 were the last real Olympic games and, in the future, only half of the planet participates in such games.

How many invasions and slaughters of civilians are you expecting in the future?

I take it you weren't alive during the 1980s.

I tried to say that the present sanctions on sportsmen concerning the Ukraine war are politicizing sports, these sanctions are also politically biased and unprecedented, while the Ukraine war is not an unprecedented war. No one sanctioned the US sportsmen due to the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. The present sanctions and isolations may amount to the effect that some huge countries are leaving those international sports organizations forever.

The question of future wars is irrelevant to what I was trying to say. Of course, after the nuclear war, there will be no Olympic games, no half-Olympic games, no sports events whatsoever.

Quite to the contrary. I am still alive despite the 1980 Olympic games blocked by Western countries. Unfortunately, the present situation is much-much worse and totally unprecedented.

Note that the Cuban crisis was resolved as the politicians were not complete idiots. The current crisis began at the end of 2021, as Russia started to demand security guarantees. Differently from the Cuban crisis, this time the Western politicians have been complete idiots and irresponsible aferists.

Well I’m not sure if it’s even possible to sanction the US given the position of the dollar but it’s up to those against any given war to sanction the aggressor. Perhaps they were not bothered enough by that slaughter to suffer the economic pain of imposing sanctions, Europe is experiencing unprecedented fuel prices but they still greatly reduced their imports of Russian oil although not completely. Why not ask Iraqs neighbours why they didn’t sanction the US and its allies.
Having said that I’m not an advocate of the sanctioning of Russian and Belorussian special Olympians it’s not like they have any control over what crimes their regimes commit, but given that a lot of countries would have boycotted the event if those two countries had attended I think the least injustice has been committed.

So Russia is going to left FIDE, and create a different association?

And then he will have to invade FIDE because they pose a threat to his national security.

Rot. This crisis started when Putin invaded the Crimea in 2014; which he did because he is a complete, not idiot, but psychopath. Blaming it on the West is mere agitprop.

As for the word "aferist", maybe it means something in Russian, but in English it's so much covfefe.

His security guarantees included the US and nato reverting back to the soviet era defensive line probably in order to make his annexation Ukraine and the rest of Eastern and Central Europe a lot less messy.
You cannot appease an expansionist dictator you can only contain or kill them.

@kevcvs57
It sounds like the moral "The might makes right."

@kevcvs57
According to Russia itself, the threat to its national security consists in the expansion of NATO. NATO is not a charity community, nor is it a chess organization. NATO is a military block.

@Shallow-Blue
I am not here to decide whether the Russian or the Western propaganda is right.
However, I merely remind you that in 2014, first there was a coup in Ukraine, the elected president was ousted, and Western countries, particularly the US, strongly supported that revolution, Maidan, as the Ukrainians say. So if you declare here that Putin is a psychpat, then, from the logical point of view, why not to declare that Obama is a psychopat. Obama was the president of the US who supported the Maidan revolution and he himself has publicly admitted it.
