@jj-adams saidIf you really are a school teacher, then how do you see your role?
Yes, it's much better to remain ignorant of everything outside your immediate social circle.
a) Propagandist
b) Indoctrinator
c) Someone who accepts and supports the ability of the kids to scan the patterns of the current world as they see it, and to come up with conclusions and plans of their own
?
@beowulf saidNo sht Sherlock! That was my point.
All kids do that.
It's a problem.
It was him who mentioned that most of his students are black.

1. Take roll.
2. Teach'em the three R's or whatever the class is about.
3. Make sure they don't hurt each other or vandalize the room.
Edit: I retired years ago and am just subbing, and I want to flip-flop numbers one and three.
50% of the job is now making sure they don't do anything stupid or destructive.
@jj-adams saidBecause lazy asses like you stopped teaching them how to think generations ago.

@kingdavid403 saidHow about presenting a factual news story, and asking them how they feel about it, asking them if they think what happened is fair, and asking them what a better outcome might be?
because they are back on their Smartphones and texting Immediately after.
So this is because they are Black Students? You sound and look stupid.
We show them news and current events all the time, they just don't listen, and if they do, they don't retain it for more than a few minutes,
Ever heard of a test or quiz?
How about going beyond the textbook for once?
@soothfast saidI also remember that the norm was to not really be aware of what is going on in the news - not absolutely major things, heed you, but the Britney Girner thing is really just some sideshow to the Ukraine war, so I am not surprised that the kids do not know who she is.
When I was a kid in the 1980s I and most of my peers barely followed the news. And yes, more than one high school teacher voiced the opinion that it was an absolute tragedy. Maybe it is unfortunate.
@jj-adams saidDid you ask how many of them sit around the radio in the evening?
First day back to school, I told each class about Griner's 9 year sentence, and out of 80+ students, less than 10 raised their hands, and I had to explain it to the rest.
When I asked how many of them watched the news, not one said yes.
This is grade 9-12 , and I am horrified.
By the way, this school in over 95% POC.
@kmax87 saidThanks for the clarification.
And you think you will find it any different in a POWO school? I don't think you're in touch with young people's viewing habits anymore.
I don’t know who Brittany Griner is.
But I do know what today’s youth know. They all know who Justin Bieber is married to, what Selena Gomez is up to, who Zayn is dating and no longer dating …

In my day, a teacher’s job was to inspire young minds to exercise their natural curiosity by giving them a direction and letting them seek for themselves. This was before the Internet, mind you. I guess that’s all gone downhill since then. If you’re now just trying to maintain order, that’s a damning indictment of how families raise kids these days, too. A nation in serious decline, and that ain’t Joe Biden’s doing; it must have started at least a generation ago.

I agree 100%. This was basically my point also.
He's too prejudice to care; and, he most likely could care-a less if his "POC" students died.

I would say...🤔
Don't be an idiot criminal like me and Brittney Griner.
Sadly they think crime is "cool"
