@Suzianne saidEducation CANNOT be privatized - not completely. Government exists to protect all our rights equally, so what is the purpose of a "government school" as opposed to a "charter school"? π
At the risk of sounding like our local moron Mott, What a gullible fool.
We all did fine in pubic schools. Most of us went on to college.
If Boston kids are deficient in math, it must be because of private charter schools.
And in case you've been living under a rock all this time, in some states, charter schools have been sucking up all the public school money fo ...[text shortened]... blic school system really was, and how many minority children are receiving NO education at all now.
What do you have a RIGHT to be taught?
The answer is simple: you have a right to be taught the law. No one can be expected to live in a society where so many things are written down and which you have to respond to LEGALLY in writing unless they have a RIGHT to be taught how to do that. That involves reading and writing, and basic math (e.g. enough to calculate your taxes.) Of course some science and math and history and literature will have to come along with that since "the law" does not exist in a vacuum.
This proves that public schools MUST exist because rights are protected equally for everyone all across society. EVERYONE has a right to a free education so that they can learn the ins and outs of what they will be expected to do (e.g. obey laws; fill out forms, etc.)
So when someone says "we have to completely privatize education" STAND UP AND TELL THEM THEY ARE WRONG AND YOU KNOW WHY!
BUT - there is no right to be "taught a trade." If you want to be an artist or a musician or an arc welder or a cookie cutter - find the right school. Find the training. It may not be free. You may have to take out a loan or indenture to pay that training back. No problem.
Basic education on The Rules, though - that HAS to be free. π
* EDIT: It is funny to me. So many smart people saying, "we need to do this or that" like "get rid of public schools." And I'm like "No." Why does no one do proofs anymore? I'm a simple biostatistician (retired). Logic and reason DO exist. We can do proofs about government. We CAN figure things out - why does no one do it? More important - why can none of our LEADERS do this? Weird.
@Soothfast saidToo right.
This is modern living. Blow cash to buy labor-saving devices, then blow more cash buying exercise equipment or a gym membership to make up for the exercise one isn't getting while using the labor-saving devices.

Everything in this post is 100% correct.
I've always bought mulching lawnmowers, and my current one is electric. My idiot neighbor, before they moved our garbage bins to curbside service, used to fill our shared big garbage bin in the alley with leaves and cut grass the day before they picked up. A complete annoyance. It was like living next door to a viking barbarian.
@Suzianne saidI just saw an article on Charter Schools, there are MANY good aspects of charter schools. I don't know where you are coming from, sorry, I think I will go with the article. Easily googled, could change your suspect mind.

As to 'all did fine in public schools', we are talking about today, little feller. Look it up, ...not fine. Boston has 23 schools, not ONE, not ONE student in all the schools are proficient in math. You can look it up. Look before you type. Just being helpful

@AverageJoe1 saidWhy don't YOU 'look it up' to see how many of those schools are charter schools? Hmmmmm?

Creating the Department of Education was possibly the best thing President Jimmy Carter ever did. Education for ALL, not just rich white kids.
And STOP calling me 'little feller'!!!
@Suzianne saidCan you imagine THROWING AWAY leaves and grass clippings?!? π
Too right.

Losing all that good mulch, watching your land get poorer and poorer every year. Are people trying to create deserts or what?!
The height of insanity: people move to Phoenix, a desert. They plant vast 'English' lawns which only grow in rainy climates, to play golf on. They drain the Colorado River to spray water on them. Then they mow them closely and throw the grass clippings away. Then go buy mulch and chemical fertilizer to replace the nutrients they lose.
I drive through rural Illinois and Kentucky - miles out of regular view - and see country people on riding mowers, mowing and mowing and mowing acre after after acre. For what? Why? They don't play there - or even walk there. They think it is decorative. Or it keeps away snakes or something. Poor snakes.
Silly Americans living plastic, artificial, wasteful lifestyles that Trump is so desperate to use public tax dollars to subsidize and defend. π

@spruce112358 saidExactly. It's also why we're in the hole concerning global warming, also.

Did you not note my mentioning my dislike of letting go of my hard earned money?π€π²
@wildgrass saidi love hearing people who don't use product X say it should be banned.
Can we all agree that leaf blowers should be banned?
All day, every Saturday, for the whole summer, leaf blower noises echo through every neighborhood in America (unless they've been banned). Noise pollution, particulate pollution, air pollution, all just to move leaves and grass clippings from one side of the yard to the other, only to have the wind just blow them back ...[text shortened]... communities.
Honestly, what's the counter-argument? Can we just get rid of these things for good?
I bet if we banned vehicles because they are loud and pollute you'd scream bloody murder....
@spruce112358 saidBack in the day people moved to the desert to get relief from hay fever. Now there are so many chemical-saturated green lawns checkering the landscape that the pollen count is about as high as anywhere else. And of course there are the water shortages that are exacerbated by the waste of maintaining those lawns. Arizona is not Alabama. Not geographically, anyway.
