I knew that would draw you fellers in, because you are curious yourself............HOW can it be defined?
A wage, determined one to be lived on, so to speak, would have to apply to everyone doing 'that job'.
So if I have that job, with no responsibilities, no dependents or wife, I can live nicely on a wage that has been determined to be 'enough to live on'. So there, is your definition.
So, people, with debt and children who have the job..... is it a living wage for them? A rhetorical question, but it proves that there can be no such thing as an across-the-board living wage.
I thought that if we all stipulate to the above, that we will not have to plod through posts in the future referencing that silly phrase, ....that, it cannot be used when making points about economics and employers, etc.
Any serious thoughts? Nothing silly please.
@athousandyoung saidGot it. You can let that be your definition, but of course the employment society would have to follow it, which would be impossible, as the 'cost of housing plus food' is not same for every employee.
Cost of housing plus food to start with as a minimum.
So, how does an employer pay all of his employees under your definition? A fair question to your fair definition.
@athousandyoung saidWhich leaves nothing for everything else, that's not a living wage.

@averagejoe1 saidLocation, location, location the cost of living is different from one place to the next so is it going to be the same everywhere?

@kellyjay saidIf we want people to work we should assume the cost of living in the places where employment opportunities are

@athousandyoung saidWe were talking about a living WAGE, which presupposes having a job.
If you're going to work add transportation, cell phone, computer and internet
And you are still leaving out a lot of stuff.
Interesting that you put emphasis on computer/cell phone/internet and put those needs above paying water/gas/electric utility bills, etc.
Are you living at home?
@JJ-Adams But, all of you, you do not address the problem. Go ahead and add cell phone, or whatever, but the elephant in the room is......
Let us say you arrive at the magic number, the magic wage, whatever it is, you may even include the cost of a frisbee.....
NOW, Now, you (we) must be able to apply the 'Minimum Wage, USA" to all of the employees. Each have different living requirements, responsibilities. If the wage is fixed, how is it possible that it will be appropriate for all the same workers on, say, an Amazon assembly line? Or 10 waitresses in a deli?
That is the issue.
@jj-adams saidThat's all part of housing expenses

Are you living at home?
https://wellkeptwallet.com/common-monthly-household-expenses/
Home expenses will include everything related to your home, including items such as:
Your monthly rent or mortgage payment
Utility bills such as electric, natural gas and water
Maintenance costs such as landscaping, replacement light bulbs, etc.
Repair costs such as a need for a new vacuum, furnace, flooring, etc.
Property tax payments (unless they’re collected with your house payment)
@athousandyoung saidWhen you folks decide what factors are included in expenses, please let us know what the living wage should be. This is an important thread. Please do not confuse living wage with minimum wage. Minimum wage is easy. An employer offers that wage, and a prospective employee Chooses whether to accept it or not.https://wellkeptwallet.com/common-monthly-household-expenses/

We are almost there. Nirvana! It will make all future issues easier to discuss.
@athousandyoung saidsounds like slavery

@mott-the-hoople saidEven our resident conservatives seem to evade this issue???
