Now here's a Republican idea I can get behind. Divorce should be harder.
Irreconcilable differences is an oxymoron. It should not be considered a legitimate reason to end a marriage. A 10 year old knows this.
Abandonment, abuse, adultery. OK, those are real things.

@wildgrass saidI personally know three couples that have married each other twice; and divorced each other two times. Go figure... I was the best man at two of the couples first marriage. The other couple was my ex-wife and her husband after me. She married and divorce another man after that also. lol... I dodged a bullet there. Her significant other is now a white poodle.

I do feel people should be able to get a divorce for infidelity's fairly quickly; along with physical abuse. Other than that, they should attempt to work it out.
@wildgrass saidWhile I am agreeing with you the only way to slow down divorces is to stop it from being a financial windfall for some women. In many developed countries it is the woman [up to 80% of the time], that brings divorce proceedings. Creating more stringent reasons, is not going to help because if you say for eg that adultery is a good reason, she is going to do it, and she is also capable of abusing the man just to instigate the divorce. The man could be the perfect husband, if the woman is after being a rich independent divorcee then she will do whatever it takes. The law in many countires is skewed in favour of the woman. This needs to be changed.

Other things that can be done is to make marriage harder in the first place. Quickie marriages should be done with. Children should also be taken into account. In the case of kids divorce should be extremely difficult and should never make the woman rich.
@wildgrass saidThe last 40 years or so is the first time in the last 800,000 years of human evolution that a woman did not need a man to get a roof over her head. Women are empowered as never before. Men have become a disposable luxury for women. Women enter into marriage no longer out of necessity, but for fun or profit, and they can damn well leave for more fun or more profit. Get with it.

@KingDavid403 saidSeems like a lot of paperwork for no reason lol.

I made sure my vows were "until death" and not "eternity", because only one of those seemed like a reasonable time frame for marriage.
@wildgrass saidlol. Yes, marriage can be taxing at times. I'm happily married at present; we've been together 22 years now. Are there vows for eternity? I haven't heard that one before. lol... sounds like forever... π€

@ManDelaMaza saidMost divorces dont reach the court, and are settled amicably. It is only in rich developed countries lawyers need to make money and so encourage the greedy women to take him for all you can get.
People don't get married anymore. The courts favour the women.
And they wonder why birth rates are low among whites.
Also, crap is too expensive.
Anyone getting married in today's world is a fool.
@KingDavid403 saidYes, beyond this life, eternal, everlasting, forever, unending are commonly used in wedding vows.

Not for me.
@Rajk999 saidInteresting perspective. I heard a statistic once that females who are breadwinners in a relationship are 2X MORE likely to divorce, but would have to look it up.

Maybe finances play a role, but the irreconcilable differences thing is nonsense.
@moonbus saidYou're absolutely right. I think those people should not get married.

If you do get married, it's kinda the whole point to stay in it for life.
