He had a beautiful wooden set composed of representations of English royalty and other medieval themed pieces and a really nice solid oak(?) board.

I told him I wouldn't play on that set because it was non-standard and against tournament rules. He went to the Tournament Director who told him I was right and that if I objected, we'd have to play with my (standard) Stanton set.
The moral is, when you enter a competition you play by its rules.
