Sweden isn't the picturesque country we grew up knowing about.
It's changed a lot.

You're right, Sweden isn't at all how it used to be - it has changed a lot, and it had to change - some things are better and some worse. And so is a great deal of Europe too. We can't keep Sweden to ourselves even if many of us would have wanted to. From the middle of the 19th century until early 1920's, 1,5 million Swedes left Sweden for North-America mostly due to poverty and religion.
