This is truly scary stuff:
The US govt. spends more per annum on Veterans' Disability pension ($57 billion), than it spends on all education ($54.4 billion)!
"President Bush requests $54.4 billion in discretionary appropriations for the Department of Education in fiscal year 2007, a decrease of $3.1 billion, or 5.5 percent, from the 2006 level."

Replying solely to your point that more is spent on defence than education.

This is hilarious: Next year, Shrub will cut the budget for education "To save $3.5 billion in taxpayer dollars, the President's budget recommends eliminating 42 programs proven ineffective."

This in the same year that he has gone cap in hand to ask for another $120 billion in taxpayer dollars EXTRA, to pay for the Iraq fiasco.

To be fair, the vast bulk of money spent on education in the US is by state and local governments and not the federal government. The figures from 1999-2000 were that the US spent $373 billion of tax dollars on education and 92.7% came from state and local governments. http://www.policyalmanac.org/education/archive/doe_education_spending.shtml
