maybe this virus was unleashed just to get rid of most of the older people on Earth. Let's face it, most retired folk are no longer productive, and some say, a drain on the resources of any nation...besides the world's population is too high anyway.

Not true. H1N1 had almost no impact on those over 65 years and Spanish Flu mainly killed people aged between 18-24 years.

They are not only good with the grandchildren they are essential for the optimum function of the grandchildren and the grandchildren's parents if you read up on the key factors that influence outcome in post natal depression and the factors that facilitate the development of parenting skills. Some people have even theorised that this is why it is the species with the most sophisticated parenting systems that evolved menopause to ensure the contribution of a large pool of experienced non-reproducing women. (I have to add to my fellow men that we come out a bit less useful in this one, so should we devote ourselves to supporting senior women or work hard on our bickering skills in online forums?)

Sounds just like a shrug off to a serious pandemic.
I guess you just want this to be treated like just another seasonal flu so you can just have your country return to daily life dealing with the real issues at hand.
