@moonbus saidLmao the woke "professors" who don't even teach anymore. They are pathetic. Good riddance.
Of course, there will be innovation. But America will no longer be at the forefront of it. When funding is canceled for American universities and research institutes, good professors and researchers go abroad, and the good students follow them abroad.
I think we will be fine when those professors teach their "Why transgender Mayans mattered 5000 years ago" bullcrap somewhere else.
Buhbye

@wildgrass
you are correct
humans are a virus that consumes and destroys the host
@moonbus saidYeah and one of them went to Canada. Such a loss for mankind.

@PuzZuLz saidHow about CAR-T therapy? This was a pipe dream for scientists in the 1980s but currently curing cancer with treatments that don't cause extreme pain and discomfort like traditional chemotherapy. The technology wouldn't be possible without small research grants funded by the NIH over the years, leading to cures with incalculable benefit to mankind and also the formation of multiple companies valued at billions of dollars.
The last cure for a disease was polio? Over one hundred years ago?
Modern scientists suck. They haven't earned any respect period.
Or CRISPR therapeutics? Again, a small grant funded by the NIH to look at how bacteria form resistances to viral infections that unveiled new technology to edit genomes and now we have cures for diseases that have plagued mankind for centuries such as sickle cell anemia etc. The return on investment for the American taxpayer is likely hundreds of fold. The value to the whole world is yet to be measured but likely to be completely transformative and again, not possible without the small government grant to get the idea going.
Absent these investments, economies are likely to stagnate with dull ideas and innovative projects that lack feasibility or direct-to-product solutions will never materialize.
@wildgrass saiddidnt know queers had grandkids
We stopped investing in the science that will create new knowledge and future cures for diseases.
We allowed our governments to spend beyond its means for decades, generating tens of trillions in public debt that cannot be paid off in our lifetimes.
We ignored the obvious warnings of climate change that will necessitate future generations to make infrastructure invest ...[text shortened]... ave a poorer quality of life than we had. They will pay our debts, and they will resent us for that.

@Zahlanzi saidIts not the same. Almost every modern innovation was supported early by government investments. Modern medical and tchnological and energy innovations have taken decades to develop, there's zero chance you can get VC funding for a project that might pay out in 40 years.
there will still be innovation. It will just be done by the corporations and ofc be offered at a premium. Just like Corpo Jesus intended.
(Cyberpunk future in the making)
It's more than likely if the funds dry up, the innovation will just disappear.

@wildgrass saidit's no doubt what situation is preferrable for the public. We have on one hand breakthroughs like the polio vaccine and on the other hand little modifications to various insuline drugs so they can be repatented. Or taking billionaires into space.

Definitely not the same. My intent was to accentuate the dire situation we are in ("the future is Cyberpunk" is not a good thing, was fishing to see who else is a fan of the genre)
