2 Charged With Plotting to Blow up Democratic Headquarters

Two California men have been charged with plotting to blow up the Democratic Party's headquarters in the state capital, a bombing they hoped would be the first in a series of politically-motivated attacks, federal prosecutors said Thursday.

The pair used multiple messaging apps to plan to attack targets they associated with Democrats after the November 2020 presidential election, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement. Their first intended target was the John L. Burton Democratic Headquarters in Sacramento, prosecutors said.

“According to the indictment, the defendants planned to use incendiary devices to attack their targets and hoped their attacks would prompt a movement,” the statement said.

Ian Benjamin Rogers, 45, and Jarrod Copeland, 37, each face multiple charges including conspiracy to destroy by fire or explosive a building used or in affecting interstate commerce, prosecutors said.

Rogers, of Napa, is charged with additional weapons violations, including one count of possession of unregistered destructive devices, and three counts of possession of machine guns.

On Jan. 15, law enforcement officers searched Rogers’s home and seized a cache of weapons, including 45 to 50 firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition, and five pipe bombs, prosecutors said.

You’d think the phrase terrorism would have appeared in the charge somewhere

Prior to the Buffalo shooting, these two would've just been waived off as two random nutcases. But in light of recent events (and especially Jan 6th) it seems extreme political-motivated violence will be a tool of the far right.

They probably wouldn’t have scream very loud. It’s really odd that trying to blow up a political opponents office is not deemed an act of terrorism. If I worked in that office I’d be terrified. It must be a fact that white men attacking the other for political reasons is not a terrorist act in the US.
I’d bet that if some radical feminist group tried to blow up the office of some anti choice misogynist governors office it would get labeled as a terrorist act.

Maybe we should make it illegal to disagree with Democrats. After all, out of 330 million people, someone is going to hear your disagreements and might get mad. It's way to risky to allow anyone to criticize democrats.

Correct. For both the far right AND the far left.

Politically motivated violence has always been in extremists' arsenal.

Okay, then what's the point of this thread?

Democrats and Republicans overwhelmingly agree that blowing up each other's headquarters is out of bounds. Next topic.

Perhaps you don't need to hear this, but to vivify, I ask this question...

Why don't we just make it illegal to disagree with Democrats?

What are you talking about? This thread is about political violence, not "disagreeing" with Dems.

Okay. Tell me what is the point?

Who supports political violence? What causes it?

This may be a bit complicated for a Trumpist, but it is possible to disagree with someone without planning violence.

There are 74 million that voted for Trump in 2020.

Somehow you have not noticed any that have not planned violence. Maybe observational skills is not your long suit.

Yeah, he lost the popular
vote in 2016 too.
