@no1marauder saidThere are other cases of good actors being famously badly cast in particular roles. Clark Gable as Parnell springs to mind, as well as Gregory Peck w/ a ludicrously bad German accent in The Boys From Brazil.
Or maybe they picked the actors they thought were best for the parts and didn't worry about their "race"?
I remember people freaking out when the great English actor, Idris Elba, who happens to be black, played the Gunslinger in an adaptation of the Stephen King books. It was remarkably stupid then and it remains remarkably stupid now.
@athousandyoung saidIt would be odd indeed if Othello were not dark-skinned.
Did they make Susannah white too? Because her race mattered in her backstory...
@moonbus saidNot sure I agree with any argument claiming racial or ethnic ring fencing of any part unless the ethnicity or race of the character is integral to the story but even then it will primarily be a story about human beings in a given situation and can be transplanted.

Got to laugh that this debate was ignited by people claiming a lack of authenticity relating to a Tolkien back story.
There is a reason films and plays based on books are usually called adaptations

The post that was quoted here has been removedI’ve seen the video, the bears did not look at all happy.
No one complained when a bunch of yanks ended up in the Hollywood adaptation of Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, but god forbid that a black guy should play a real white person like a Hobbit or an Elf.
‘It’s political incorrectness gone mad’

@kevcvs57 saidLots of people complain every time Hollywood uses white actors instead of Asians in Asian stories.

Scarlett Johansson, who consistently takes on roles for nonwhite actors, plays the Japanese lead in this lackluster film. Nevertheless, this miscasting sparked a larger conversation on Hollywood's whitewashing of Asian roles.
@athousandyoung saidI can imagine a genuine anger if Hollywood is intentionally avoiding Asian actors but usually these crap films rely on a name to get bums on seats.

If a characters skin colour or ethnicity is integral to the storyline then it would be stupid casting to not use an actor to fit the role but most stories are neutral stories about humans in a given predicament or setting.
